Obituary

Robert "Bob" Herman Lochner was born in Madison, WI, on April 17, 1939 to Herman P. Lochner and Margaret C. Lochner (nee Ryan).  He had one sister, Jean K. Odden (died 8/22/2009).

Bob married Mary Sarajane Gille in Gratiot, WI on Aug. 11, 1962. They were married for 50 wonderful years.  They had four children:  Ann (John) Reinicke – Rubicon, WI; Susan Lochner – Port Washington, WI, MaryKay Trejo – Milwaukee, WI and Daniel (Ann Powers) Lochner – West Allis, WI. Bob is survived by eight grandchildren (Amanda Lochner, Brook Cina, April Reinicke, Chili Trejo, Anthony Reinicke, Nicholas Powers, Peter Lochner and Celeste Lochner) and seven great-grandchildren (Madalynn Lochner, Layla Sperrazza; Rosalee, Emma, Silvia and Vincent Cina; and Lincoln Reinicke).

Bob graduated from Edgewood High School, Madison, in 1957 and earned four degrees from Univ. of Wisconsin – Madison:  B.S. (Mathematics) 1961, M.S. (Mathematics) 1962, M.S. (Statistics) 1966, Ph.D. (Statistics) 1969.

Bob was a Professor of Mathematics and Statistics at Marquette Univ. 1968-1985.  From there, he became a consultant in quality management and methods 1985-1993, a quality analyst for the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations 1993-1995, and vice-president of quality resources, Affinity Healthcare System, 1995-1997.  He wrote one book, Designing for Quality, coauthored by Joseph Matar, published in 1990.  The book received a "Book of the Year" award from the Institute of Industrial Engineers in 1991.  A French language edition was published in 1992. His work was also published in multiple quality and statistical journals. Additionally, Bob testified as an expert witness in statistics for several legal clients.

During and after his consulting years he gave workshops or talks on statistics and quality improvement through the U.S. as well as foreign countries including Canada, Guatemala, Brazil and Romania.

He was a true academic with a life-long love of learning.

He and Sarajane loved to sail, spending many hours on their sailboats on Lake Michigan and, after retirement, in the Caribbean. The friendships he formed as a long-time member of the MAST sailing club were especially important to him, as were his friends from the Theater in the Ground.

Bob was always looking for ways to give back to the community and was an avid civil rights activist.

Bob was an active member of St. Michael Catholic Parish in Milwaukee since 1982. The people of that faith community were always close to his heart. A Mass of Resurrection will be held at St. Michael Church, 1445 N. 24th St. in Milwaukee, on Saturday, November 4th at 3:00 PM. Visitation will take place from 2 to 3 PM prior to the Mass. Memorials may be made in Bob's name to St. Michael's Catholic Church or Repairers of the Breach.
